TARGET SPECIES Depending on your target species and fishing application, different amounts of backing are recommended: For trout and grayling fishing , around 50 m / 55 yds of 20 lbs backing is usually sufficient For pike streamer fishing and stillwater fly fishing , 50–100 m / 55–110 yds with 20–30 lbs is recommended For coastal fly fishing for sea trout and similar species, 100–150 m / 110–165 yds with 20–30 lbs is usually a good choice, while tropical species such as bonefish or permit often require an additional 50–100 m / 55–110 yds For salmon and steelhead fishing , 100–200 m / 110–220 yds with 30 lbs is recommended, while heavy setups or exceptionally large fish may justify 50 lbs backing In heavy saltwater fly fishing , 200–300+ m / 220–330+ yds of backing with 50–80+ lbs breaking strength is commonly used When fishing for trout, the actual breaking point during the fight is usually reached much earlier through the leader, knots or other components rather than through the backing itself
